Smart Goals....Why You Need Them To Be Wealthy And Successful?

Smart goals are for smart people. So, how do you know if you are smart? Well, let's first define what makes up a smart person. Have you ever heard or said, “he's a smart guy” or “she must be a smart person?” I'm sure you did. Now, stop and think for a second, when you said or heard that what quality made them smart?

The answer is actually two qualities, direction and clarity.

Find someone smart in your life right now, whether you personally know them or not, and ask yourself, “Why are they smart?” You may say that this person is good with numbers, earns a lot of money, is a successful real estate investor, or she is CEO of a fortune 500 company. However, I want to point out that their success resides in having clarity and direction of who they're becoming and what they want.

Smart goals are like street signs, they keep you on track when you're paying attention. These goals give you the ability to see where you are going, what you want to achieve, and a better chance of getting there.

Goals are very very important in life. I remember when I didn't use the power of goal setting. I don't know how I got anywhere in my life without goals, and you know what, I didn't. For a long period of time I had no idea what I was doing. Why did I go to school? Why was I playing sports? Why was I doing what I was doing? It wasn't until I found the power of smart goals did it change my life.

Earl Nightingale said, “Not having a goal in life is like a ship with out a rudder. You'll get tossed around in the throws of the ocean and probably end up on some rocky shore.”

There are three components in having smart goals.

Having a Purpose

“Goals are a means to an end, not the ultimate purpose of our lives. They are simply a tool to concentrate our focus and move us in a direction. The only reason we really pursue goals is to cause ourselves to expand and grow. Achieving goals by themselves will never make us happy in the long term; it's who you become, as you overcome the obstacles necessary to achieve your goals, that can give you the deepest and most long-lasting sense of fulfillment.” ~Anthony Robbins.

Having a purpose gives your life and goals meaning. It gives you fulfillment and a reason to be alive and grow. When you narrow in on your purpose for being here, life will be easier, more fun, exciting, and worth living.

I believe that each of us has a purpose, and we already know what it is. We just have to push through, cut out, and remove the clutter and garbage that surround our lives. When you are setting and achieving goals, a purpose will be a necessary foundation to have any sense of accomplishment. I mean, what's the point of setting goals if there's no fulfillment when they are achieved? That's where purpose comes in.

I believe that our overall purpose in life, as human beings, is to realize our ultimate awareness with our creator. However, each of us is autographed with a unique and God given purpose. All you have to do is pay attention to those “inner knowers” that constantly pull at you. Look for what gets you emotional, what brings you joy, happiness, and peace.

For example, when you watch a movie are there any scenes in that movie where you get emotional. What emotions are you feeling at that particular time?

I love watching inspirational movies. One of my favorites is Seabiscuit. There's a scene in that movie where Red and Seabiscuit over come insurmountable odds to win a race. During that scene, I get emotional and feel the feelings of hope, giving, and love. I know that one of my purposes here in life is to give love and hope to others.

Another example is the movie, Aviator. Howard Hughes' entrepreneurial courage and vision gets me going. I can watch that movie everyday. I paid attention to my feelings and understood that being an entrepreneur and helping others get what they want is a purpose for me.

From there, I started putting the pieces together. I paid attention to what emotionally moves me in life. Not just from watching movies, but all aspects of my life. I came to the conclusion that this is my purpose: To consciously give love and hope so I may improve and better the lives of everyone I meet.

Every time I read that statement it strikes tears to my eyes. I know that I have to become a role model for everything I pursue and give a sense of hope and love, so other people feel that they can be, do, and have what I am.

If you need some more help on finding your purpose, Steve Pavlina writes a great article called, “How to Discover Your Life Purpose in About 20 Minutes” , and there is an excellent book by Brad Swift called, “Life on Purpose.”

Developing Your Vision and Goals

A vision is your overall picture of how you want your life to be. It's your ideal life financially, relationally, physically, mentally, and spiritually. Your vision is the complete and total end result of what you want in life.

Your smart goals are the stepping stones that lead you to achieving your desired lifestyle. These goals keep you on course towards your vision.

For example, you are driving to a vacation spot starting in Pittsburgh and arriving in Beverly Hills. Your vision is going to be getting to Beverly Hills. It's enjoying the shopping, going to Hollywood, eating at the fine restaurants, and seeing celebrities.

Your goal is going to be driving from Pittsburgh to Chicago in one day. Do you get it? Without the first step, the goal of driving to Chicago, you will never leave Pittsburgh. Beverly Hills will just be a wish and dream in your imagination.

You see, goals are like action steps, they get you moving towards your vision. Each time you complete a goal, you are expanding and growing yourself to become a bigger person in achieving that grand vision.

There is a science to setting and achieving goals. I call it, “The goal setting theory.” Here are some goal setting tips to follow by:

  • Smart goals are written down, stated in the present tense, and abide by universal time.
  • Smart goals are concentrated thinking; every time you think about it and read it you are moving and forming habits in direction of that goal.
  • Great goals are stretch goals. They stretch your physical abilities and mind to achieve that specific goal.
  • Great goals are smart goals, they're connected to a meaningful purpose and vision.

What you want to avoid is setting wimpy goals that are easy to achieve. Wimpy goals get you nowhere. There isn't any personal expansion and growth when we achieve a wimpy goal. Trust me, you will know when you're setting a stretch goal or a wimpy goal.

I recommend setting one or two smart goals at a time and do not move on until those goals are a reality. When you have too many goals in your awareness, you'll tend to be overwhelmed, lose focus, and probably not complete any of the goals.

You can either be a light bulb or a laser beam. A light bulb has a broad focus that will illuminate a whole room or a laser beam that has a very narrow focus and the power to cut through steel. Which do you think is more powerful?
